CHAPTER SIX

“Ow!” Kate yelled, as she lay on her stomach.

Clenching her jaw, she listened the needle in the tattoo gun buzz. She couldn’t believe she was doing this, but Luke wanted to do it. If she didn’t know any better, she would have guessed this was a bucket list of some sort. Coming back from her thoughts when she felt a squeeze on her hand, she looked up to see Luke looking very concerned. She had to keep him from jumping the tattoo artist as he was ready to punch the guy for hurting her. He had already had his done, and she reminded him that it did hurt.

“You know you didn’t need to do this,” he said, softly.

“I know, but I was jealous,” she joked.

Rolling his eyes. “Well, you didn’t have to get a big tattoo like that.”

“I know, but I liked it.”

“Babe, you’re so fucking hot,” he whispered, before leaning in to kiss her.

She laughed before screwing her eyes shut when the tattoo artist did more work on her back. Opening them quickly.

“It’s okay, I’m okay,” she reassured Luke.

He relaxed a little and sighed as he sat back. She could tell he didn’t like this, but at least he wasn’t punching the tattoo artist.

As they left the tattoo parlor, Luke had never let go of her and planted kisses whenever he could. She laughed as she recalled how he used to be like this back in the day.

“So, how are you going to explain your tattoo to the church people when we sing this Sunday?” he teased.

She turned so he could see her back as she pointed at it.

“Hey, it’s religious, it’s angel wings,” she joked.

Luke pulled the back of her tank top down a little more and saw more of the angel wings she had tattooed on her back.

“So, what made you get those?” he teased with a smile.

She turned to look at him. “Because I’m an angel,” she flirted back.

He laughed, shaking his head.

“What? I am an angel, unlike you who copied me,” she said, with amusement in her voice.

“I didn’t copy you,” he defended himself.

“Then why did you go with angel wings on your back, too.”

“They’re not angel wings.”

“Prove it,” she teased, crossing her arms.

“Fine,” he said, with a smile, pulling his shirt off and turning around.

He shuddered at the feel of her hand rubbing against his new tattoo on his back. He let her examine it for a while, enjoying her touch on his sensitive skin.

“A bird?” she questioned.

“Not just any bird… it’s a phoenix.”

“Why a phoenix?”

“Because, like a phoenix that rises up from the ashes, I was given a second chance,” he said, quietly.

She slowly turned him around and he could see the concern in her eyes as tears threatened to fall. Stroking her face, he didn’t want the tattoo as something to harm her.

“I’m sorry,” she said, bowing her head.

Cupping her chin and lifting it up. “Don’t be, I’m happy you’re back with me,” he said, with a smile.

Before she could object anymore, he covered her mouth with his.
